To promote the knowledge of the art and science of dentistry by supporting those measures which promote the elevation of the standard of health education, provide community activities which elevate the awareness of dentistry to the lay person and provide current topics in dentistry and correlated fields for obtaining continuing educational credits.
During the period of segregation in the United States, African American dentists were not allowed to join the major dental associations. This was most apparent on the local level, and Tampa was not an exception.
In 1952 Dr. Carl H. Norton spearheaded a drive to unite the black dentists in the Tampa Bay area. Dr. Carl Norton, along with Doctors William O. Bunch, Martin Silas, David E. Smith, Prince A. Ervin, Leroy Ervin, and James L. Green, formed the Technique Dental Study Club. The purpose of the organization was to promote camaraderie among its members, to provide service to the community and to provide a forum for the dissemination of new dental information to its members.
The organization has prospered and grown through the years. The membership includes over 25 dentists and specialists from Tampa, Lakeland, Clearwater, and St. Petersburg. The name has been changed to The Tampa Bay Area Dental Association and is a recognized component of the Florida Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical Association and the National Dental Association.
